The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST) and the Zamboanga City Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) conducted a seminar on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) yesterday morning at Grand Astoria Hotel.

The topics discussed during the seminar were IP basics, trademarks and copyrights, patents, IPR exercise, legal framework for technology transfer, licensing rights, opportunities, and privileges of researchers, introduction to licensing, key components of licensing agreement, technical components, financial components, and licensing exercise.

The lecturers were composed of lawyers Atty. Ferdinand M. Negre, Atty. Oliver P. Baclay Jr. and Atty. Peter L. Calimag. There were 42 participants coming from the government, NGO, and academe who came from all over Region IX.

“IPR is very important because it benefits everyone. The general public will also be benefited because they will be informed about the quality of the product, about the safety of the product, for the inventors, they will be able to get incentives for patenting their products," said ZCHRD Chairman, Dr. Teresita G. Montaño.

Montaño said that this will make the participants understand their rights aside from that they will be able to implement IPR policy in their own institution when they go back to their places.

"Aside from these, we are also promoting research as a very important component because in doing research you develop new knowledge," she said.
