On July 19, 2017, a total of six (6) schools in region 9 had received the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) STARBOOKS digital library through a collaborative effort between the agency’s regional office, and Coastal and Marine Resources Management in the Coral Triangle – Southeast Asia (CTI SEA).

Through the Asian Development Bank (ADB), CTI SEA had donated one (1) high-end computer unit installed with STARBOOKS to each of the following schools: Kabatan National High School, Kumalarang National High School, Lapuyan National High School, andToribio Minor National High Schoolin Zamboanga del Sur; Buug National High School, and Malangas National High Schoolin Zamboanga Sibugay.

The Bay of Schools

The deployment of the STARBOOKS technology in the area is part of CTI SEA’s implementation of RETA 7813, a project which aims to assist Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines in implementing actions under the respective nations’ Coral Triangle Initiative and National Plans of Action.

CTI SEA’s focus is on five (5) sites: Dumanquillas Bay in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Tañon Strait in Central Visayas, the municipalities of Taytay and Balabac in Palawan, and Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi.

The abovementioned schools in region 9 fall under the Dumanquillas Bayarea - CTI SEA’s site for Ecosystems Approach to Fisheries Management, which pursues the sustainable management of targeted fisheries resources by balancing ecological and human well-being through good governance.

The RETA, with support for the LGU and the local communities assisted in identifying suitable enterprises that could assist the organization’s efforts in fisheries management.

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will conduct its 39th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) on July 12 – 13, 2017 with the theme “Attaining Sustainable Development Goals: Philippine Fisheries and Other Aquatic Resources 20/20”.

This year, the agency has adopted the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to be its overarching theme, while focusing on the science-critical “fisheries” aspect and how those in the sector will impact the achievement of SGDs in the Philippines.

Through the activity, the academy aims to convene a conference to determine how the Philippines will achieve the SGDs. It serves as the leading forum for the presentation of scientific and policy research results.

In preparation for the ASM, NAST PHL conducted Regional Scientific Meetings (RSMs) in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao earlier this year, with the most recent meeting being in Baguio City, from the 15th to the 16th of May.

Listed below are the invited experts and the topics that they will discuss during this year’s ASM:

Dr. Vachel Gay B. Paller

Associate Professor at the Institute of Biological Sciences of UP Los Baños

Topic: “Fish Health and Its Implications to Food Security”

Dr. Maria Lourdes San Diego-McGlone

Professor at the Marine Science Institute

Topic: “Water Quality Issues Linked to Fish Production”

Dr. Lynn Crisanta Panganiban

Professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the UP College of Medicine and consultant at the National Poison Management and Control CenterTopic: “Environmental Contamination of Aquatic Resources: Implications on Health”

Ms. Josie Platon-Desnacido

Science Research Specialist at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute

Topic “Fish in the Filipino Diet: Pros and Cons”

Dr. Aaron Joseph L. Villaraza

Associate Professor at the Institute of Chemistry, College of Science UP DilimanTopic: “The Philippine Seas: Frontier of Pharmaceutical Discovery and Development”

Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco

Acting Dean of the College of Fisheries of Central Luzon State University

Topic: “Freshwater Aquaculture: Status, Prospects, and Problems in the Philippines”

Policy recommendations on appropriate interventions as agreed upon during the event’s plenary sessions will be submitted to the Philippine government and the private sector. More than 350 scientists and researchers from all over Luzon are expected to attend this activity.
