In her closing remarks, Dr. Lulu Bravo, Chair of the MMHRDC Steering Committee and the Executive Director of the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the consortium in promoting research.

According to Dr. Benedicto, “This was a cohort study done over two years involving HCWs assigned in the medical wards and medical intensive care units in ten tertiary hospitals. The findings of the study might have implications in screening and employment policies among HCWs and infection control strategies that should be employed in these tertiary settings.”

Dr. Jubert Benedicto, Chair of the Council on Tuberculosis of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) discussed his research entitled, “The Incidence of Active Tuberculosis Among Health Workers with Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Tertiary Hospital Setting.” The study revealed that health care workers (HCWs) have a high prevalence of latent TB infection (LTBI) and low incidence of active TB.

Dr. Josephine Tolentino of St. Luke’s Medical Center tackled “Personalizing Treatment for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: IPASS Study.” Her study proved that the drug Gefitinib is superior to carboplatin-paclitaxel as an initial treatment for pulmonary adenocarcinoma among nonsmokers or former light smokers in East Asia. The presence in the tumor of a mutation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene is a strong predictor of a better outcome with gefitinib.

“In response to the findings of the inventory, DENR intensified its anti-smoke belching campaign. We also implemented the garage testing of public utility vehicles, intensified industrial monitoring, and information and education campaign in coordination with Local Government Units (LGUs) to undertake those activities.” said Engr. Rosete.
Engr. Jean Rosete, Chief of the Air Quality Management Section of the Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) presented the “Status of Air Quality in Metro Manila.” Engr. Rosete reported that the sources of air pollution in Metro Manila are natural and man-made or anthropogenic. Man-made air pollutants are from mobile sources like motor vehicles, industries, and area sources like open burning, building constructions and paved roads. Based on the National Emission Inventory conducted by the DENR, most (86%) of the pollution load comes from motor vehicles.

The forum gathered researchers and experts from the 23 member institutions of the consortium to provide a venue for research collaboration among stakeholders.
In celebration of the National Lung Month, the Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium (MMHRDC) held a research forum with the theme “Healthy Lungs, Clean Air, Good Life” last August 26, 2011 at the Manila Doctors Hospital.

Zambo researchers to participate in research competition in health, science & technology in Bacolod City

Three researchers from Zamboanga City will represent Region IX in the 5^th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week celebration on 10-12 August 2011 at the L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City.

The delegates, selected and endorsed by the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD), are 1.) Gemma Acosta of ADZU-School of Medicine, presenter for Student Research Category with her study entitled “Development and Evaluation of Eye Screening Tool among Grade 1 Students of Public Elementary Schools in Zamboanga City” ; 2.) Rynel Wee of Brent Hospital Colleges Inc. (BHCI), presenter for the Inter-Regional Research Category with study entitled “Healthcare Service Competencies of Volunteer Nurses Preferred by Internal Clients in Surgical Department of the Zamboanga Medical Center”; and 3.) Michael Jay Solis of ADZU-College of Science and Information Technology, presenter for the Poster Exhibit Contest with poster entitled “Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Biological Activity of Marine-Derived Fungi Associated with Seaweeds in Zamboanga City, Philippines.”

Together with the presenters is Dr. Servando Halili Jr., Dean of the Graduate School of the ADZU, who will also represent Dr. Grace Rebollos, Chairperson of ZCHRD.

The three-day event bearing the theme, “Convergence in Divergence, Innovations for better health,” is a venue for stakeholders to interact, to learn from each other, to share information and experiences, and contribute research-based solutions to health problems, among other things.

Another highlight of the event is the launching of Health Innovation Marketplace and awarding of winners for the Best Mentor Award and Poster Exhibit Contest.

ZCHRD is an organization created to optimize the use of research to help alleviate the health and nutrition problems of the people in Region IX, with financial and technical support of the DOST’s Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). The consortium is led by the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).

The PNHRS is led by the Department of Health and the Department of Science and Technology through the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). The PCHRD Governing Council is the policy-making body of the PNHRS. (Thelma E. Diego/DOST IX PRESS RELEASE)

1^st Regional Health Research Summit slated Aug 17 & 18 in Zamboanga City

Are you interested or involved in health research or study? if yes,  the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) invites you to participate in the 1^st Regional Health Research Summit which will be held at Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City on August 17 & 18, 2011. The activity is also conducted in collaboration with the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines (MCNAP) Zamboanga City Chapter, Inc., with the theme “Interplay of Health and Culture in Zamboanga Peninsula”,

The event will highlight presentation of papers and posters (completed researches) generated by researchers, students, practitioners of health community based interventions, public health and medical education. The significant contribution of the said research activity is the generation of proceedings on recently conducted studies to explore areas for agency collaboration, networking and resource sharing among member research and development institutions.  To date, around 25 papers / posters are expected to be presented.

Aside from completed research presentations, the summit will also conduct Grand Proposal Write-shop for new health research proposals using the research format and guidelines of Department of Science and Technology-Grants-in-Aid (DOST-GIA) program.

The event is for free to those at least 100 participants representing ZCHRD member agencies / institutions, paper presenters, and other pre-identified health institutions.  However, other interested participants will be charged a minimal amount of registration fees to cover food expenses during the 2-day affair.
