MANILA — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) launched the I-Salt project in Alaminos, Pangasinan, the introduction of a salt ionization technology for the town's salt makers.

In a recent interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA), DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said there is a salt community in Alaminos that is looking forward to this technology.

He said the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) would teach this community about it. 

"They are seeking for (assistance) in salt ionization. I met with 21 salt makers in the area," he said.

The I-Salt project is an iodized salt processing model and design that uses three technologies.

The DOST said these technologies are the saturated brine feed reservoir, spin dryer, and iodizing machine.

Saturated brine feed reservoir is an evaporating setup, which has a capacity of 300 liters per batch. This helps produce finer salt with higher purity.

Spin dryer was designed to reduce the moisture of salt. This can process up to 75 kilograms per batch of salt, even in humid and rainy conditions. 

The agency added that reducing salt moisture is in accordance with the ASIN Law (Act of Salt Iodization Nationwide), which contributes to the elimination of iodine deficiency disorders through a cost-effective measure of salt iodization. 

Salt will then be transferred to an iodizing machine, a portable screw-type machine, which is operated continuously with 750 kg per hour capacity. This machine infuses iodine to the salt.

Another DOST-attached agency, the DOST- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), helped in the development of these technologies. 

Meanwhile, dela Peña said he is happy with how the local government of Alaminos is adopting the technology. 

"You will see there the cooperation between the DOST and the local government unit. They are very keen on adopting technology that will be appropriate for them," he said, adding that Alaminos has done many research and development (R&D) activities.

Ang mga lolo at lola ang bida sa pagdiriwang ng Elderly Filipino Week o Linggo ng mga nakatatanda tuwing unang linggo ng Oktubre (Oktubre 1-7) na pinapagtibay ng Presidential Proclamation No. 470. Ang taunang pagdiriwang ay naglalayong mabigyang diin ang mahalagang papel na ginagampanan ng mga nakatatanda sa pagbuo ng komunidad, gayundin ang pagtaas ng kamalayan, at pagtugon sa mga isyung kinakaharap hinggil sa sektor ng mga nakatatanda. Ngayong taong 2018, ito ay may temang: “Kilalanin at Parangalan: Taga-Sulong ng Karapatan ng Nakatatanda sa Lipunang Mapagkalinga!”

Sa pagkakaroon ng edad, nagkakaroon din ng iba’t-ibang karamdaman sina Lolo at Lola na nangangailangan ng masusing pag-aalaga sa kanilang kalusugan. Narito ang mga nutri-tips sa mga problema ng katandaan, sa pagpapanatili ng malakas na pangangatawan at wastong nutrisyon.

 
  1. Panghihina at kawalan ng ganang kumain.Kumain ng sapat at kung walang gana ay kumain ng pakonti-konti pero mas madalas. Mainam rin na magkaroon ng tatlo o higit pang kulay ng pagkain sa pinggan na makakapaghikayat sa pagkakaroon ng ganang kumain. Maliban sa kanin, maaaring alternatibong carbohydrateso pagkaing pampalakas ang kamote, gabi at mais.
  2. Kumain ng makukulay na gulay at prutas, isdang mayaman sa omega-3 fatty acidtulad ng tuna, mackerel, sardinas, talaba, broccoli, cauliflower at red pepper.
  3. Pagtitibi o constipation.Uminom ng tubig kada oras at tuwing kainan. Sa ganitong paraan, makakaiwas din saurinary tract infectionsat pagkalito. Nakakatulong din ang pagkain ng prutas at madadahong gulay na mataas safiber na siyang umaagapay sa maayos at normal na pagdumi ng tao.
  4. Hirap sa pagnguya.Ihanda sa maliliit na piraso ang pagkain at piliin ang malalambot na pagkain. Pwede ring i-steamang mga gulay at prutas para malambot. Sa ganitong paraan ng pagluluto, mas napapanatili ang mga sustansiyang taglay ng mga gulay at prutas.
  5. Hypertension o Altapresyon.Limitahan ang sodium at maaalat na pagkain. Gumamit ng iba’t ibang pampalasa tulad ng luya, kalamansi, bawang, sibuyas at iba’t ibang herbs. Isang utos mula sa 10 Kumainments ang hinay-hinay sa maaalat, mamantika at matatamis para makaiwas o hindi lumala ang sakit sa puso, hypertension, diabetes, kanser at iba pang lifestyle diseases.

Sa pamimili ng makakain, gumawa ng listahan ng mga bibilhin at gamitin ang senior citizen cardpara sa diskwento. Maaari ring magtanim ng gulay na magsisilbing ehersisyo na, libangan pa.Para sa halimbawa ng gabay sa pagpaplano ng pagkain ng mga nakatatanda, ang Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) ng DOST ay may nabuong Pinggang Pinoy for Elderly para sa edad 60 pataas.

Sa kabuuan, sundin ang mga payo mula sa 10 Kumainments at Pinggang Pinoy. Nawa’y ito’y iyong ibahagi sa iyong lolo at lola o sa iba pang nakatatanda bilang isang paraan ng pagpapakita ng iyong pagkalinga sa nakatatanda. Bawat isa, bata man o matanda ay may magagawa tungo sa lipunang malusog at masigla.

THE Department of Education (DepEd)-Central Luzon has announced the regional search for the Best School Implementer of the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” program (GPP) this October.

The DepEd-Central Luzon, in statement to SunStar Pampanga, said that the search aims to validate the implementation of the GPP relative to its objectives, to document best practices which can be shared to other implementers, and to recognize the efforts of best implementing schools.

The criteria to be used in the search include the number of vegetables planted in terms of square meters, presence of urban or containerized gardening, presence of school nursery or crop museum, adaptation of different strategies or technologies such as bio-intensive gardening, organic pest management, and organic fertilizer.

The regional search committee composed of the regional nutritionist as the chairperson, shall also validate reports regarding feeding program, accessibility and sufficiency of water supply, and other relevant activities such as waste management, and income generating projects.

The top three winners shall receive plaques of recognition and cash prizes worth P50,000, P30,000, and P20,000 respectively.

The deadline for the submission of entries is on October 26, 2018.

Last September 10 to 14, the DepEd, through its School Health Division (SHD) under the Bureau of Learner Support Services (BLSS), gathered its health personnel from all over the country for the National Capacity Building on the Integrated School Nutrition Model (ISNM).

The said training is a collaborative project of DepEd, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, and the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute, the ISMN integrates nutrition interventions under DepEd’s School-Based Feeding Program, GPP, and Nutrition Education Program, to help improve the nutritional state of schoolchildren, and improve their knowledge and attitude towards nutrition and gardening.

DepEd has also issued the policy and guidelines on the Oplan Kalusugan sa DepEd through DepEd Order No. 28, 2018 dated July 6, 2018. The issuance includes the strategies and activities (management and institutional arrangements, planning and targeting, coordination with partners, orientation of personnel, conduct of the One Health Week, continuation of the health and nutrition services and activities, funding, reporting and recording, and monitoring and evaluation), roles and responsibilities of the field offices, and prohibited acts and undertakings.

 

 

 

THINK ON THESE: Water purification

So much have been written and said about climate change.  But there is one crisis that has failed to ignite world leaders: water.  And to think of, water, is one of the most important components for a person to live.

“A person can survive only three to five days without water, in some cases people have survived for an average of one week,” says thewaterpage.com. “Once the body is deprived of fluids the cells and organs in the body begin to deteriorate. The presence of water in the body could mean the difference between life and death.”

“Water is the most precious asset on Earth,” points out Dr. Sandra Postel, director of the Massachusetts-based Global Water Policy Project.  “It is the basis of life.”  She believes water problems will be right there with climate change as a threat to the human future.

“Although the two are related, water has no substitutes,” Postel says. “We can transition away from coal and oil to solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.  But there is no transitioning away from water to something else.”

In a report some years ago, the Nobel-prize winning United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that by 2080 nearly half the world’s population will be without clean water.

The New York-based United Nations Development Program (UNDP) echoes the same concern.

“The necessary sense of urgency is lacking,” UNDP said in a statement.  “The facts have been staring us in the face for years.  While demand increases, the annual available fresh water supply per inhabitant is regularly decreasing and is expected to fall to an average 4,800 cubic meters by the year 2025 against 7,300 cubic meters in 1995.”

In the Philippines, current statistics show that 20% of the population have no access to potable water and 432 municipalities have less than 50% service coverage.  About 6,000 premature deaths a year are caused by water-borne diseases.

In the 1950s, the Philippines had as much as 9,600 cubic meters of clean water per person, according to Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero, former head of the Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development.  Four decades later, Filipinos must make do with little more than a third for that volume – 3,300 cubic meters per capita.

Although the government is trying its best to provide Filipinos potable water, its efforts are outwitted by rapid population growth.  From 1995 to 2005, the government had successfully provided water for an additional 23.04 million people.  That may seemed a good news but the sad thing is that population increased by 24.5 million over the same period.

Experts claim that with an annual population rate of 2 percent to 2.3 percent, the Philippines would be facing a water shortage by 2025.  That’s seven years from now!

“The rapid urbanization of the Philippines, with more than 2 million being added to the urban population annually, is having a major impact on water resources,” a report from the Asian Development Bank pointed out.

Maude Barlow, in her book The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for Right to Water, points out that “access to clean water is a human right.”  She exhorted the international community “to see beyond the borders to the moral courage necessary to conserve and share this precious resource, as well as working on a treaty like the one we hope to see regarding the climate crisis that sets goals for conservation, sharing of resources, providing technology necessary to developing countries that helps them with conserving through agriculture, infrastructure, and basic education.”

In response to the urgent need for potable water in most parts of the country, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) promoted the use of ceramic water filter, which the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) has developed.

“The ceramic-based water filter can remove contaminants in drinking water, making them perfect for home use,” wrote Violy Balaoing Conoza, of the S&T Media Service.

So far, three models had already been developed.  The first two pot-type ceramic filters can carry 6.5 and 1.5 liters of water, respectively.  The most recent edition, the candle type water filter, has 1.5-liter capacity.

The ceramic filter is lodged in a plastic container with a faucet at the bottom for collection of the filtered water.

“The filter is made from red clay and we added nano (very, very small or minutest) antimicrobial agent that can eliminate water-borne organisms,” explained Josefina Celorico, supervising research specialist and lead researcher.

According to Conoza, all three models can purify tap water, deep well water, and raw water (from ponds and spring).  “Through the filters, safe, potable drinking water is readily available and accessible even in remote areas,” she said.

The ITDI researchers said the filtered water from ceramic filter have passed the Philippine National Standard for drinking water in both tests/counts for coliform and Escherichia coli, the most common form of water-borne disease-causing microorganisms.

The ceramic filters are easy to install and maintain – aside from they are reasonably priced.

My source said that as of the third quarter of 2013, about 10,000 pieces of candle type ceramic water filters had already been produced.

Since then, nothing is heard of the ceramic water filters.  I think with the problem of water pollution and water scarcity, it is high time to produce ceramic water filters at the areas where clean water is necessary.

Aside from rapid population growth, water crisis in the Philippines can also be traced to degradation condition of the environment and pollution.  According to an ADB study, only about 33 percent of river systems are classified as suitable public water supply sources, and up to 58 percent of groundwater is contaminated.

Of the 457 water bodies classified by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), only 51 percent meet the 1996 water quality standards. Sixteen rivers are considered biologically dead during dry months.

Milking It: Addressing stunted growth and underweight problems among kids

FIRST, the hard facts.

One out of every three children in the Philippines aged 5 to 10 years old is suffering from stunted growth. On top of this, one out of every three children aged 5 to 10 years old is underweight. This is according to the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipinos developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Philippines (FNRI).

Stunted growth is defined by The World Health Organization as the “failure to reach one’s full potential for growth” and poor nutrition is one of its many causes. This can result in a child being underweight or weighing less than the average for his or her age and height.
But there is a way to address this problem.

 Idelia G. Glorioso, Senior Science Research Specialist of the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Philippines (DOST-FNRI), said that drinking milk, plus an active lifestyle, can help kids achieve their proper height and weight.

Bent on raising awareness on the importance of having proper nutrition, Glorioso, who was the resource speaker in a recently held forum on information regarding the country’s nutrition status, emphasized that stunted growth as well as being underweight are problems that should not be ignored.

She also added that if not addressed early, stunted growth may lead to lost productivity and opportunities, and to nutrition-related
diseases later in life.

It is a known fact that milk is essential for growing children to have enough and consistent nutrient
intake to ensure maximum growth potential.

After a successful launch in Manila and a media roundtable discussion in Davao, Alaska’s Batang Alaska Milk Program was brought to Cebu City
for another media roundtable discussion to promote awareness about stunted growth and being underweight among kids and how these can be addressed with proper nutrition.

Glorioso emphasized the need for parents to make sure their kids, especially those who are three to 12 years old, to maintain a diet that is energy giving (Go), which means rice and other alternatives, body building (Grow), which refers to protein sources, like meat and fish, and body regulating (Glow), which is composed of fruits and vegetables.

The aim of the forum is to provide information on proper and affordable nutrition to Filipinos, which Alaska Milk Corporation has been doing for over four decades.

“Our mission and vision is to promote affordable nutrition in the Philippines because through this, the Filipino youth will be able to achieve their full potential and grow up competitive in life,” said Isabel Ruiz, Alaska Milk Corporation Marketing Manager.

To support this goal, they have launched the new Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk, which is a good source of vitamin D, high in calcium and iron and packed with protein.

It has “essential nutrients that will help every Filipino child achieve the right height and weight for their age.”
