Mr. Marlo Asis, Alliance for Science, Philippines

FNRI: Pointers in giving solids to your baby

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, May 15 (PIA) -- The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) - DOST recognizes the crucial first foods introduced to a baby that can lead to a healthy growing and lifestyle.

Food should be given one at a time and appropriate to the baby’s age. Don’t start new foods at the same time allowing three days before trying out a new one.

The three days will allow time to observe allergic reactions to a new food. Give new foods at breakfast or lunch to avoid development of reactions in the night.

Start with a small amount of food, then gradually increase it. Use thin liquid purees then gradually shift to more solid and chunkier meals.

Ensure that the baby can cope comfortably with the new texture.

Offer bland food only and don't add salt until age one year as baby's kidneys cannot cope with salt.

Even after the age of one, add only a little amount of salt and little or no sugar. Too much sugar leads to tooth decay and makes the child develop a sweet tooth.

Don’t force the baby to eat maybe the baby is not hungry. Don't worry about this, he will make up for it the next time.

Always test the temperature of the baby before giving the food and practice good personal hygiene when preparing baby’s food by washing of hands with soap and clean water before handling baby’s food.

Also, sterilize utensils used for feeding. Give only freshly cooked foods and freshly peeled fruits and not leftover food. (Lljr/PIA-Negros Occidental)

Jetski ride to Rise: Baste subs for Rody

by Vito Barcelo

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte skipped the jet ski ride to Benham Rise or Philippine Rise on Tuesday, but presidential son Sebastian Duterte and Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go did, the Palace said Tuaesday.

Go said he and Sebastian “represented” the President by doing the jet ski ride.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said Duterte’s trip to Philippine Rise to send off Filipino scientists who will conduct maritime research was both “symbolic” and “assertive.”

He made his remarks as Duterte was set to lead  the sendoff to commemorate the 2012 United Nations declaration that the undersea feature was part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and extended continental shelf.

Although Duterte did not show up during the trip to the Philippine Rise, Roque said the visit of Sebastian and Go was part of Duterte’s simple ceremonial  sendoff for the team to begin the country’s first scientific research in the vast undersea plateau off Aurora province.

With a jetski ride, Presidential son Sebastian ‘Baste’ Duterte and Special Assistant to the President Christopher ‘Bong’ Go hold a sendoff ceremony for  50 Filipino scientists waho will conducat research on the  vast expanse of the Philippine (Benham) Rise.

Duterte said Philippine Rise was part of  Philippine territory and warned he would declare war against any foreign country going there  without the Philippine government’s permission.

Philippine Rise is an offshore frontier facing the Pacific Ocean that is about 24 million hectares  and is in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Philippine security officials raised concern about intrusions when a Chinese ship was monitored criss-crossing the waters early last year, drawing public attention to the territory that some believe could be harboring gas and oil deposits aside from its rich fishing areas.

Roque said Duterte will send some 50 Filipino researchers who will study the resource-rich area.

China has converted three reefs in the disputed West Philippine Sea into artificial islands into military posts, but Roque said the Philippines did not relinquish any claim to any disputed region.

“We have always been putting down our feet. We have not surrendered our title, we have not relinquished our title, we maintain we have title,” Roque said.

Philippine Rise declared marine-protected area

CASIGURAN, Aurora — President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Tuesday declared portions of Philippine Rise a marine-protected area limited to Filipino scientific research, one year after he renamed Benham Rise in an executive order as Philippine Rise.

Mr. Duterte signed the presidential proclamation off the coast of Casiguran, Aurora, aboard BRP Davao Del Sur during the send-off ceremony for a team of Filipino scientists set to explore the underwater plateau until November.

“Around 50,000 hectares of the Philippine Rise shall become a strict protection zone limited to scientific studies. At this time, only Filipinos. More than 300 hectares shall be designated as special fisheries management area,” he said in his speech.

He also commemorated the first anniversary of Executive Order No. 25, issued on May 16, 2017, renaming the region Philippine Rise.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), human activity is restricted in marine-protected areas to conserve natural resources found within the region.

The Northern Luzon Command (NoLCom) is also set to cast the first buoy and the Philippine flag marker at the region’s shallowest point called Benham Bank tomorrow.

Present in the ceremony were National Security Adviser Hermogenes C. Esperon, Jr., Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana, Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato Dela Pena, Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol, Trade Secretary Ramon M. Lopez, Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, and Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian.

After the send-off ceremony, Mr. Esperon, special assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence T. Go, and presidential son Sebastian Z. Duterte rode jetskis in Casiguran Bay.

Marine scientist Doralyn Dalisay from the University of San Agustin Iloilo said the all-Filipino team of scientists would explore the marine microbes and other organisms living in Philippine seafloors as well as study the geo-chemistry of Philippine Rise.

“We have to explore carefully the area so that we could competently manage and sustain it,” she told reporters.

Ms. Dalisay, who is also a Balik Scientist, said the marine microbes in Philippine Rise could possibly be used to create new medicines, antibiotics, anticancer compounds, and dengue or malaria cure.

“Our resources to do science is here. And so, we as Filipino scientists might as well do it as our own first. And if we are not capable, we could ask for help or collaborate with other countries to push more the science of the Philippine rise,” she said.

The Philippine Rise became part of the country’s continental shelf in 2012 following a ruling by the United Nations that the country has sovereign rights over the resource-rich underwater plateau off the country’s eastern coast.

The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) has planned to name the undersea features in Philippine Rise after Filipino indigenous and endemic tree species.
