Alternative sa synthetic na paraang makapagbibigay lunas sa dengue

MANILA – Sa isinagawang Round Table Discussion (RTD) ng National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) ay nagpaliwanag ang mga nominado para sa Outstanding Research and Development Awards sa dalawang kategorya para sa Basic Research at Applied Research.

Isa sa eksperto ng basic research Dr. Rosalinda C. Torres na may presentation na pinamagatan “Extraction, Characterization and Bio-Assay for Larvicidal of Some Philippine Medical Plants”.
Kabilang sa plant base or naturally grown na halaman na pinag aaralang maging kapalit ng synthetic para na gamot na maaring makapag sugpo sa dengue ay ang mga dahon ng kadoy, suha, mangosteen, guyabano at avocado.

Ayon kay Torres ang mga nasabing halaman ay maaring maging pamalit sa chemical based na ginagamit nating insect repellant. Ito makakatulong hindi lang sa dengue pati sa zika virus. Dahil ang nangangagat ay babaeng lamok lamang.

Kabilang sa mga dumalo sa presentasyon ay ang Director ng Technology Application and Promotion Institute Engr Edgar Garcia, Outstanding Young Scientist Richard Maualil, Academician Ruben Villareal, National Scientist Raul Fabella, Academician Rhodora Azanza, National Scientist Lourdes Cruz NAST Executive Director Luningning Samarita at Engr Alex Sy.

A better outlook for PH’s fruit industry

THE COUNTRY’S fruit industry is expected to benefit from at least two projects on banana and mango, which are funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

Identified as priority commodities under the Harmonized National R&D Agenda for 2017-2022 and DOST-PCAARRD’s Industry Strategic S&T Program (ISP), banana and mango are among the fruit crops being studied under the “ACIAR-PCAARRD Horticulture Program on Fruits and Vegetables.”

Titled “Integrated management of Fusarium wilt (FW) of bananas in the Philippines and Australia,” the project aims to reduce the impacts of FW and improve the productivity and viability of banana plantations managed by smallholders.

The project’s accomplishments include the identification of mesh wire boot as the most effective scrub in removing soil to limit the spread of disease inoculum; report on the economic feasibility of growing “Giant Cavendish” tissue-culture variant 218 in Foc infested area; and the conduct of the Mindanao-wide banana symposium participated by 140 banana growers and Agricultural Extension Workers.

The second project titled “Research and development of integrated crop management for mango production in the southern Philippines and Australia” intends to reduce product losses due to pests and diseases, decrease inputs costs, and improve quality and yield of mango to increase growers’ profit.

The project’s accomplishments include identification of parasitoids as potential natural enemies of cecid fly; demonstration and training on canopy management in Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur; and conduct of a national survey on “best practices” in nine major mango growing areas in the country.

Accomplishments for the two-year duration of the projects were presented during the end-of-project review in Cebu City by implementing agencies – University of Southern Mindanao, University of Southeastern Philippines, Southern Philippines Agri-business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology, and Provincial Agriculturists Offices of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.

In a related development, improving the yield and quality of jackfruit is also being looked into under a project that aims to develop and implement integrated disease management strategies along with crop management options in jackfruit production.

The project is again funded by ACIAR and implemented by the Visayas State University (VSU), Bureau of Plant Industry-Davao National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center, and Department of Agriculture Regional Office 8.

Together with ACIAR, the DOST-PCAARRD co-monitors the project.

Titled “Tropical tree fruit research and development in the Philippines and Northern Australia to increase productivity, resilience, and profitability,” the project was recently evaluated at the VSU.

One of the project’s components aims to improve the existing vacuum-fried jackfruit chips in Leyte.

This component is an offshoot of the DOST-PCAARRD completed project on “Processing of Jackfruit into High-Value Food Products,” which was also implemented by VSU.

The project is part of the “ACIAR-PCAARRD Horticulture Program on Fruits and Vegetables Phase 2” which aims to improve the livelihoods and food security of smallholder farmers in selected areas of the Visayas and Mindanao. DOST urges students, teachers to pursue S&T career

MANILA -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is intensifying its awareness campaign efforts among students and teachers, an executive told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday.

Luningning Domingo, Director IV, National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) said it was the directive of DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña to make the public appreciate science, and also to bring benefits of science to them. "This is also why the DOST carries the tagline, 'Science for the People'," she said.

As a DOST-attached agency, NAST brings scientists to schools in the regions. The goal is to encourage students to pursue a career in science and technology.

Domingo said the DOST also sends speakers from the Science Education Institute (SEI) to different schools to talk about scholarships that they can avail of.

"Because oftentimes, students may be interested, but they do not know how they could pursue a career in science due to financial constraints, for instance," Domingo explained.

NAST also brings scientists to the regions to guide teachers how to prepare research proposals, especially for international publications.

"Normally, the teachers have case studies and they need to partner with universities to do the research. Our scientists are here to guide them how to prepare proposals," Domingo said.

Bringing the scientists to the regions is beneficial for both the students and teachers, as they would not need to spend for their fare to go to Manila, she noted.

Domingo cited the DOST's plans to develop the Philippine Science Heritage Center as a "world-class science center".

Domingo shared that NAST had also set two international meetings this year.

She said an international meeting is slated next month, and this would be attended by select medical practitioners.

The other meeting will be in October, and this will be organized by the UK Academy of Science. (PNA)

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said its online store that showcases products of local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) recorded almost 11 million hits in 2017, or an 80 percent increase from the previous year’s 6.1 million hits.

Engineer Sancho Mabborang, DOST Region 2 director and onestore.ph program manager, said the huge increase in views of the DOST-developed e-commerce showed that Filipino MSME products are getting global exposure through the internet.

Data analytics done by the DOST onestore.ph project management office on the e-commerce platform showed that the views or hits reached 10,912,584 for the whole of 2017.

Mabborang noted there was again a large percentage of hits coming from abroad, with more than 5.8 million, while local views were at 5,068,375.

It will be recalled that the foreign hits on the website for 2016 were around 90 percent.

“This could mean that there is also a huge increase in the awareness of the onestore.ph online store among our fellow Filipinos as a result of our persistent efforts to promote the e-commerce portal,” Mabborang told The STAR.

Online transactions done on the onestore.ph website had reached P1.3 million in 2017, a significant increase from the previous year’s P1,015,900.

While the amount seemed small, Mabborang said that they believe this was because repeat transactions are done outside the portal once buyers and sellers conclude their first online transactions.

Onestore.ph has a total 10,902 products showcased and for sale on the portal.

Science Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said that the success of onestore.ph has been noticed by the Department of Trade Industry (DTI), which has forged a partnership with the DOST for the inclusion of their assisted MSMEs into the program.

“We want to help more MSMEs as possible. So we are happy that we have forged this partnership with the DTI,” Dela Peña said.
