The Ateneo Research Center of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) conducted a seminar-workshop on “How to Write a Review of Literature” last March 5-6, 2012 at the LRC Building, ADZU La Purisima Campus. There were 25 delegates coming from the different institutions in Western Mindanao who participated in the said event.

Dr. Ronnie V. Amorado, a faculty of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Business and Governance, facilitated the said training. The seminar-workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of the participants to recognize the importance and to learn the techniques on how to write a good literature review. It was ideal for participants who are currently enrolled in post-graduate studies and who are in the process of writing their thesis / dissertation, beginning researchers, students undertaking research subjects, professional researchers who would like to update themselves with trends in literature review writing.

This literature review writing is the first of the many activities that has been lined-up for the year by Ateneo Research Center.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University is one of the founding members of the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD), which was established on 2007.

Other activities to be conducted by ZCHRD for 2012 includes Basic and Advance Health Research Ethics Review Trainings, Research Methodology Writing Seminar-Workshop, Health Research Forum, and many more.

ZCHRD is an organization that mirrors the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) framework at the regional level with financial and technical support of the DOST-PCHRD. The consortium is led by the ADZU with Dr. Teresita Montaño as the Chairperson.

The Biotechnology Coalition of the Philippines in coordination with the Western Mindanao State University College of Science and Mathematics (WMSU-CSM) conducted a symposium on "Techno-Advantage: Harnessing the Power of Life" last March 02, 2012 at the Garden Orchid Hotel. The said event was attended by several multi-sectoral stakeholders in the academe, health, food safety, local government units, and cultural groups in Zamboanga City.

The steering Committee Chair of the Biotechnology Implementing Unit of the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Saturnina C. Halos touched on the Updates and Trends in Biotechnology while Mr. Godfrey Ramon spoke about Biotechnology Products in the Pipeline.

During the open forum, a ZCHRD delegate asked if there are researches done on cow's milk that would allow it to produce milk that has the same characteristics as that of a mother's breast milk. Mr. Abraham Manalo, Executive Secretary of the Biotechnology Coalition of the Philippines said that there are several researches being conducted to fortify a cow's milk with other essential vitamins and minerals to mitigate if not eliminate iron deficiency for instance.

Coco sugar, another product derived from the coconut tree, may have found itself to normalize blood sugar levels according to Mr. Ramon L. Rivera, the Department Manager of the Philippine Coconut Authority- Zamboanga Research Center located at San Ramon, this City during his discussion on the Biotech Application in Enhancing the Production of Coconuts.

The symposium ended with the discussion of Dr. Marilou C. Elago, the Dean of WMSU-CSM on the LGU's Cooperation in the Application of Biotechnology to Ensure Food Security followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding the Stakeholders.

A member of the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) holds symposium on "Payapa: Developing Women as Peace Builders" at the Ateneo Law School building Last January 26, 2012. Pinay Kilos (PinK!) conducted the symposium to raise awareness on women and children living in areas of conflict. Along this line, several young-blooded professionals from Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Basilan as well as people from the different sectors in society came to take part in the said event.

The said young-blooded professionals including a nurse, will be more involved in improving the well-being of families and communities especially the women and children in the affected areas as they will undergo a 3-day conflict resolution and nation building training by by PinK!

ZCHRD stressed that health is of foremost importance as it will determine the capacity of an individual to perform activities of daily living. It further added that since the young-blooded professionals will go back to their communities to practice what they learned during the training conducted by PinK!, it should also pave the pave for gather more data as to what are the specific needs of the communities in terms of health. In doing so, it will greatly help health researchers to look deeper into the situation and come up with solutions to help mitigate if not eradicate concerns regarding health.

For PinK!, having a nurse who will be directly involved in the said undertaking will give different perspective in terms of planning and implementation of their programs.

Pinay Kilos is an advocate of Women and Children. They have been conducting commissioned researches for several institutions here and abroad. It is currently headed by Ms. Jasmin Teodoro-Dinsuat as its executive director. It has been a member of the Health Research Consortium since 2011.
