Dads endorses XU’s research on dengue

The City Council has adopted a resolution endorsing the research project of Xavier University, through its Kinaadman University Research Office (Kuro) entitled: “Influence of Habitat and Climate Variables on Dengue Vectors in Cagayan de Oro City.”

The research, which is funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development with a counterpart from Xavier University, aims to come up with a predictive model from data of habitat, climate variables, and dengue mosquito abundances to identify where dengue outbreaks may likely occur in the city’s 80 barangays. Using Geographic Information System, the research team will conduct a study on the interplay of habitat and climate variables with dengue mosquito vector distribution and abundance in the city.

In a letter to Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy, the researchers requested for an endorsement to the punong barangay for the conduct of the study. They will also be tapping the services of the City Health Office sanitary inspectors, Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and zone leaders of the city to undertake data gathering activities on the monthly larval surveillances in as many as 100 households in each barangay for determining World Health Organization standard dengue mosquito indices abundance (House Index, Breteau Index, Container Index, etc.)

The legislation was reviewed and endorsed by the committee on laws and rules chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya.
