Part of the Regional Science and Technology Week celebration parallel session was the conduct of the Basic Research Ethics Training held on 10-11 September 2019 at Ibiza Hall, Palacio Del Sur, Zamboanga City.
It was conducted by the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) and was participated by member institutions and partners namely, Western Mindanao State University – College of Medicine (WMSU-COM), St. Columban College, JH Cerilles State College, Mindanao State University – Buug, Basilan State College (BaSC) and our partners from the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga (CMZ) and the St. Mary’s College of Davao City expressed their interest to be involved in the training, thus allowing them to take part in the two-day training.
High caliber speakers from the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) Dr. Marita V.T. Reyes and Dr. Ricardo Manalastas Jr lectured on the Basic Principles in Research Ethics. The training aimed to help participants understand the principles on the different moral dimensions of research enabling the application of ethical concepts that is to avoid, recognize, and correct ethical issues in research through workshops. Moreover, the event also described the different controls for research ethics, focusing on the Research Ethics Committees (RECs) and the PHREB as well as motivate participants to do and advocate quality ethical research.
In a study involving humans as the subject, researchers must observe and implement the ethical principles and guidelines in conducting research to safeguard the privacy and dignity of the person/s involved. A role playing activity was also conducted to identify issues and concerns while conducting a study, interventions to the issues, and factors that need to be considered while building camaraderie with other participants of the event.
