The Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) had recently conducted its second face-to-face training this year entitled “Orientation on Citing Literature in Research”. It was held last 29 April 2022 at Royce 1 Convention, Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

The said activity will help the researchers cite or document the sources used in their research, avoid plagiarism by making it clear which ideas are their own and which are someone else's, and gives supporting evidence to the researcher's ideas, arguments, and opinions

It was participated by the consortium member institutions mainly; Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Universidad de Zamboanga, Western Mindanao State University, Zamboanga State College for Marine Sciences and Technology, Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University, Ciudad Medical Zamboanga, and Zamboanga City Medical Center together with the high caliber speaker Dr. Servando D. Halili, Jr. Chair of Capacity Building Committee.

Dr. Halili gave emphasis to the participants on the importance of giving credit to others’ work and ideas, whether you agree with them or not. When you use their words, you must give them credit by using both quotation marks and citations. You must show readers the materials on which you base your analysis, your narrative, or your conclusions. Guide readers to the materials you have used so they can examine it for themselves. Their interest might be to confirm your work, challenge it, or simply explore it further.

After giving some exercises to the participants, Dr. Halili further iterates that good citation should reveal your sources, not conceal them. They should honestly show the research you conducted. That means they should give credit where credit is due, disclose the materials on which you base your work, and guide readers to that material so they can explore it further. Citations like these accurately reflect your work and that of others. They show the ground on which you stand. At the end of the activity, the consortium secretariat provided the CSF QR Codes to the participants for them to evaluate and also a prerequisite to receiving their certificates.
