X-Linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP), or Lubag (meaning to twist) is a neurodegenerative disease that manifests in adult males originating from Panay Island in the Philippines. While the burden of the disease in the country may be low, the cost of lost opportunities and productivity can be devastating to the patients and their families.
In celebration of the 14th National Rare Disease Week (February 22-28), we highlight the DOST-PCHRD funded project under the Omic Technologies for Health (Omics) R&D Program, "Investigating the Epidemiology of the X-Linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP)".
This project, headed by Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-de la Paz, Dr. Aloysius Domingo, and Dr. Ian Kim Tabios, aims to paint a comprehensive picture of the prevalence of the genetic cause of XDP by detecting an XDP-associated DNA variant from de-identified newborn screening cards. This study also aims to serve as a model for a more efficient conduct of future research using biobanked filter cards. Learn more about the XDP Project below.
