Part of the Regional Science and Technology Week celebration parallel session was the conduct of the Basic Research Ethics Training held on 10-11 September 2019 at Ibiza Hall, Palacio Del Sur, Zamboanga City.

It was conducted by the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) and was participated by member institutions and partners namely, Western Mindanao State University – College of Medicine (WMSU-COM), St. Columban College, JH Cerilles State College, Mindanao State University – Buug, Basilan State College (BaSC) and our partners from the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga (CMZ) and the St. Mary’s College of Davao City expressed their interest to be involved in the training, thus allowing them to take part in the two-day training.

High caliber speakers from the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) Dr. Marita V.T. Reyes and Dr. Ricardo Manalastas Jr lectured on the Basic Principles in Research Ethics. The training aimed to help participants understand the principles on the different moral dimensions of research enabling the application of ethical concepts that is to avoid, recognize, and correct ethical issues in research through workshops. Moreover, the event also described the different controls for research ethics, focusing on the Research Ethics Committees (RECs) and the PHREB as well as motivate participants to do and advocate quality ethical research.

In a study involving humans as the subject, researchers must observe and implement the ethical principles and guidelines in conducting research to safeguard the privacy and dignity of the person/s involved. A role playing activity was also conducted to identify issues and concerns while conducting a study, interventions to the issues, and factors that need to be considered while building camaraderie with other participants of the event.

The 13th Philippine National Health Research System

Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan De Oro City

Together with the research community all over the country, the Philippine National Health System Research (PNHRS) with its core agencies, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) celebrated its 13th Anniversary at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan De Oro City last August 13-16, 2019 with the theme “Achieving Health-Related Sustainable Development Goals Among Researchers and Innovation”.

 

The celebration is a golden opportunity to bud young researcher to pursue and continue their mission in the field of research for the life betterment of the Filipino community especially those from the grassroot level. Moreover, to inspire aspirant youngster to engage, get involve and embrace the pulchritude of research as where the strength of innovation comes.

 

It was participated by various groups from across the spectrum of healthcare. The conducted parallel sessions during day 1 are as follows: Ethics in Research, Research Contest Student and Professional Category, Tracking and Reporting Research Data, National Medical Writing Workshop, 3-Minute Pitch to Policy Makes Competition, Campaigning towards AIDS-free Society and CBC Networking Session with high caliber speakers from prestigious and well known agencies and institutions. Region IX won the place as the People Choice Award on the 3-Minute Pitch to Policy Maker presented by Dr. Benkassar A. Abdurajak with his protocol entitled “Micronucleus in Buccal Cells Among Betel Quid Chewers and Non-Betel Quid Chewers in selected Barangays in Zamboanga City”.

Moreover the National Medical Writing Workshop, Practical Training for REC Staff, Meeting with Consortia Secretariat and Coordinators, Refining the Research Topics on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation, Gamutang Filipino, RAMC Meeting, PAMJE Session on Improving Research Publishing and Natural Products Oral Research Paper Presentation Contest took place on day 2.

 

The main conference on the third day aims to address the concern and targets related to health and joining the worldwide efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The conference has multi-sectorial involvement ensuring that issues are well accounted for and innovations/solutions are disseminated properly. Also, one of its highlights was the fellowship night wherein the delegates was introduced during the red-carpet march and a moment of tourney builded camaraderie among participants, eventuate high spirit of happiness and joy.

 

Lastly, the awarding of the nominee for the Gella Castillo Award for Research and Social Innovations in Health (GCARSIH) participants who gave their exemplary efforts and contributions in the field of research.
