A string of activities supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will take place on February 16, 2017 in Zamboanga City.

These will be the 6th Phil LiDAR 1 Mindanao Cluster Colloquium, the Inauguration of the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center (ZPFIC), and the Launching of the Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering.

Gracing all three events as guest of honor will be no less than the DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De la Peña, accompanied by the Zamboanga City Mayor, Hon. Ma Isabelle G. Climaco-Salazar, and other key officials and personalities.

 

6th Phil LiDAR 1 Colloquium

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, uses laser technology to generate detailed, high-resolution 3D maps for flood and hazard simulations. The maps generated through LiDAR also aid in planning, construction, and energy resource mapping.

Since its implementation, the SUCs and HEIs of the Phil LiDAR 1 program in Mindanao have organized 5 different colloquiums across the island, with themes revolving around the use of LiDAR products in different areas. These colloquiums have since helped to continuously augment and improve the knowledge of these institutions in the use of the said technology.

Hosting the culminating meet will be the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. With the theme: “Retrospect. Deliver. Realize.”, the final colloquium will emphasize on looking back at the processes and experiences of the program’s 5 SUCs and HEIs, and how their respective outputs will affect the realization of the project’s vision: to strengthen the capacity of partner stakeholders and communities in terms of disaster resiliency thru the use of LiDAR products.

Day 1 of the colloquium takes place at Palacio del Sur, with registration beginning at 7:30AM.

 

ZPFIC Inauguration     

The DOST funded project amounting to 3,319,387.50PhP houses equipment and other food processing facilities developed by the DOST. The Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center’s primary focus will be the development and processing of new food products. The center’s functions will also include product innovation and diversification to maximize the value-adding of agricultural and fishery resources, the upgrading of manufacturing operations and processing systems, the standardization of local processing technologies, package designing for regional products, technology commercialization, and the strengthening of research, development, and extension services.

Hosted by the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), the unveiling and tour of the food innovation center will be held at the ZSCMST ZPFIC and Octagon Hall at Fort Pilar, from 10AM to 12NN.

 

The Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering

The launching of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) College of Engineering and Technology (CET) innovation center envisions the strengthening of the CETs linkage to the university’s colleges, and the establishment of connections with other learning institutions and industry sectors in the region through a common research and development facility.

The project, amounting to 5,155,332.31PhP, funded through the DOST Grants-in-Aid program, aims to assist WMSU in upgrading the CETs existing laboratory facilities, develop R&D activities to support the region’s industry needs, and improve the said college’s educational capabilities.

The event is scheduled to run from 3PM to 4 PM at the WMSU-CET grounds.
