Dr. Teresita G. Montaño, ZCHRD Director will participate in the PNHRS Convergence Planning Workshop on July 17-19, 2014 at the Taal Vista, in Tagaytay City.

The convention will serve as an avenue to convene the members of the PNHRS steering committe, six PNHRS technical working committees, which Dr. Montaño is a member of the Resource Mobilization Committee, and selected Regional Health Research and Development Consortia (RHRDCs) to come up with a 3-year plan (2015-2017) starting with the last quarter of 2014.

With the passage of Republic Act No.10532 or the Philippine National Health Research System Act of 2013 as well as its Implementing Rules and Regulations, this Activity is the first of its kind.

The theme for this year’s convergence of researchers for Health, Science & Technology is “Research and Innovation in Health for Disaster and Emergency Health Management”, which will be held at the Radisson Blue Hotel, Cebu City on August 12-14, 2014.

Hosted by the Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research & Development (CVHRD), the PNHRS Week Celebration provides a platform for the different stakeholders in health research to interact, to learn from each other, to share information and experiences, to voice their concerns, to contribute research-based solutions to health problems among other things.

Several activities will be held throughout the 3-day celebration to include an inter-regional oral paper presentation and poster exhibit contest of completed research papers for professionals and students; inter-regional consortium poster presentation contest; meeting of consortia chairs, heads of institutions, and researchers, and a fellow ship night, which will showcase cultural cluster presentations.

Over 600 participants are expected to join and participate in the said event

ZCHRD will be conducting a 4-day stay-in training workshop on Health Research Methods on 18-21 March 2014 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.
Member institutions are invited to submit capsule proposals for screening and only 10 individual researchers will be invited to participate during the said training.
With Ms. Ophelia M. Mendoza, DrPH as the resource speaker, the training aims to helps participants to understand the different steps in conducting research; formulate specific, measurable and feasible research objectives; know  the different study designs commonly used in research; develop the appropriate study design corresponding to the research objectives they have formulated for the research project they will be conducting; know the factors to be considered in determining the most appropriate statistical procedures to be applied in data analysis; be acquainted with the most commonly used statistical tools in data analysis; and complete the ZCHRD Research Proposal Form for the research project being planned.
At the end of the training, the participants are expected to submit their full blown research protocols for review by the Research Management and Ethics Review Committees respectively and endorsement to the DOST-Philippine Council for health Research and Development (PCHRD) for funding in the amount of 300,000 pesos.
Dr. Mendoza is a seasoned health researcher who specializes in public health. She has been conducting commissioned researches for the World Health Organization (WHO). A sought after resource speaker for her vast experience in research especially on health.

The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) and the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research & Development (ZCHRD) will conduct a 2-day training on the Basics of Ethics Review in Research

A first of its kind to be conducted in Zamboanga del Norte, the training aims to dialogue and guide participants re moral dimensions of research and help them do and/or review ethical research.

It specifically aims to sensitize them on the basic concepts, apply these concepts to avoid, recognize, correct issues, describe the different controls for ethics in research, focusing on Institutional, Research Ethics Committee and the PHREB, and to motivate participants to do and advocate quality ethical research.

30 Participants from the Andres Bonifacio College, Philippine Advent College, Dipolog City Institute of Technology, Jose Rizal Memorial State University, and the Dipolog Medical Center College Foundation, Inc. are expected to participate in the training.

It will be held at the D’ Hotels & Suites in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte on 7-8 May 2014 with Dr. Angeles T. Alora, Dr. Evangeline O. Santos, Dr. Gloria G. Florendo, and Prof. Florence A. Alcazar as the guest speakers.

The research conference, which was first held in 2011, has been a tradition to promote research & development in Region 9; since then, it is held every two years. This year’s research exhibition bears the theme: “Advancing Health Sector Capacity for Health Research and Development”.

16 different heads of agencies in Region 9 converged in a pre-conference meeting in the morning of 14 November 2013 to renew their commitment to the research consortium. Among others, they elected new officers of the consortium for the next 2 years.

In the afternoon, Dr. Rodelin Agbulos, Zamboanga City Health Officer represented Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle C. Climaco welcomed the 90 participants from the different Higher Education Institutions, Government Agencies, and Hospitals, and Non-Government Organizations in the region. In his words, Dr. Agbulos that strengthening the capacity of researchers is needed to “push the boundaries of the great unknown as well as the support of their peers and the resources of the collective research community in a bid to make the health sector [in the region] competitive and more responsive to the needs of the people.”

Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, DOST-9 Regional Director gave her message to the audience where she encouraged the consortium’s partners in the academe to look into the health and allied health courses’ curriculum to consider the possibility of a paradigm shift towards evidence-based research while creating a stimulating environment, which will continuously spark young curious minds.

Dr. Emmylou Yanga, CHED-9 Regional Director on the other hand stressed the need “to explore for more discoveries relative to the various health related problems the region has been experiencing as well as the need for more health researchers in the region”. She also said that CHED would endorse promising researches for possible funding by the CHED Central Office through the OPPRI.

The new Consortium Chair, Dr. Nimfa R. Torrizo of the DOH-CHD 9, for her part pointed out in her message that “research is crucial to development and progress, research findings serve as evidence for policy change, improvement of health program strategies and policies.” She also said that research is a specialized field and that people interested in doing research feel inadequate or unskilled and something has to be done to change that mind set.

Day 1 ended with a presentation by Dr. Cecilia S. Acuin from the Food & Nutrition Research Institute entitled “Presentation of Maternal, neonatal and child health in Southeast Asia towards greater regional collaboration research”

  3. Engr. Ilde B. Deloria & Mr. John Lomboy with Packed Cage Rotating Biological Contactor for the Treatment of Slaughterhouse Waste Water; and
  4. Nhamier M. Jikiri, MD & Salip Nastra Jumaani, MD with Pathogenic Bacteria Colonizing the Stethoscopes of Resident Physicians of ZCMC: A Cross-Sectional Study
